The Military History of the American Red Cross Following the Battle of Cedar Mountain in 1862, a surgeon was feeling the pressures of disaster, when a woman named Clara Barton, came in to his office. He referred to her as an Angel sent from heaven. At this time, she volunteered her services to help out in any way she could (â€Å"Founder Clara Barton†). Clara and a group of her friends founded the American Red Cross in 1881. They were known as the â€Å"angels of the battle field† (â€Å"Mclean†). At times of war when soldiers fight for our freedom, it is often that they wounded, lonely, and in need. Through the efforts of Clara, our soldiers have an organization to rely on. Clara prodded the government until they gave her a pass to enter the battlefields (â€Å"Founder Clara Barton†). One woman who was motivated and wanted to make a difference to our soldiers fighting for our country. She did just that and formed an organization that would eventually help millions of people every year. Today, we know it as the American Red Cross. The Red Cross has a big history of supporting our troops and became a huge organization that would ultimately help millions. Clara Barton was working as a recording clerk in Washington DC when the first troops came into town during the Civil War (â€Å"Founder Clara Barton†). The entire town were frightened and confused. Clara noticed that the men were hungry, wounded, only had the clothes on their backs, and were in need of somewhere to sleep.
